Assembled Wing Jig and Leveled Jig

The wing jig assembly was a bit of a challenge. It was originally installed on a garage floor that sloped (as all garage floors do). My shop floor is not sloped. This made it a bit tricky to assemble since the wing skin templates were bondo'd in place on the jig. I started by supporting the wing above the jig on two stands I built around the jig base. Next I leveled the jig as best possible. When I felt is was pretty close I removed the bondo from the underside of the wing and lowered it back onto the jig. I was pretty frustrated at this point when the wing appeared to be twisted. I later found out that this was due to operator error (mine). The last photo is the water level I built using a waste basket and 25' of 3/8" vinyl hose. I place the bucket of water on the bench near the center of the wing. Then I move from point to point and measure from "X" to the water line.

Finally The Wing Is Level

The week-long break helped me to regroup and make another attempt at leveling the wing. This time I realized that the center of the jig was holding most of the weight. After raising the ends the twist I thought was present disappeared and the wing lined up with the templates perfectly. I added a few more shims then bondo'd the assembly to the floor and the wing. Pictures are; Left leading edge, right leading edge, right trailing edge and left trailing edge. The top of the square is lined up with the chord line on the leading edge and the lower wing skin on the trailing edge.

Task Hours: 3.5
