|Hinge Pin Retainers:|
The Stoddard Hamilton method of retaining the hinge pins on the control surfaces is to drill small holes in the lower wing skin at the end of the hinge. Safety wire is then threaded through these holes and attached to a bent end of the hinge pins. Yet another place I don't feel safety wire belongs.
My solution was to drill one more hole in the series of holes for the wing portion of the control surface hinge. This hole is used for a small 1/8" counter sunk screw that screws into a nut-plate attached to an aluminum flange riveted to the lower hinge half. It's so simple and no blood from working with safety wire.
